As a local organization, we know that the programs we support must make a difference in our local community, and we are committed to seeing that happen via the following programs:

Domestic Violence Prevention

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. But awareness and resources for help are needed every day of every month.

Here in Skagit County, Washington, the Skagit Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services (DV&SAS) is the recognized provider of domestic violence and sexual assault services. Their services are confidential, free and available to all members of our community.

The town of La Conner provides financial support for Skagit DV&SAS along with many other county, state and federal supporters.

SILC has a program that collects toiletries for women and children who often arrive at the shelter without basic necessities. Shampoo, soap, washcloths, combs, lotion, toothbrushes and toothpaste are included in these personal needs bags. Soroptimists collect and donate to support this program.

Violence by one person against another is not acceptable, anywhere, any time.
Each person has the right to expect physical, emotional and sexual safety.

Regional

Soroptimist International of La Conner is part of the Northwestern Region of Soroptimist, which includes clubs in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Northern Idaho, and Montana. The name Soroptimist means “Best for Women” and that is what this organization strives to achieve. Each club uses its time, talents, and energy to improve the lives of women and girls in their respective communities through programs that lead to social and economic empowerment.

SIA ’s major project is the Live Your Dream Award, a major educational program to assist women who are primary financial support for their families, by giving them the resources they need to improve their education, skills and employment prospects.

Other programs include the Dream It, Be It: Career Support for Girls program, the Stop Trafficking Project, Soroptimist Workplace Campaign to End Domestic Violence, and the Violet Richardson Award.

International

Soroptimist International was founded in 1921 as a global volunteer service for women with almost 66,000 members in 118 countries worldwide. Soroptimist International also offers Associate Membership and E-Clubs.

Soroptimist International has special consultative status at the Economic and Social Council at the United Nations which gives it a voice on important discussion papers and allows them to attend the Commission of the Status of Women in New York each year to where the Soroptimist International President leads a delegation.
